Oncologists are doctors who diagnose and treat cancer. They often act as the main healthcare provider for someone with cancer—designing treatment plans, offering supportive care, and sometimes coordinating treatment with other specialists.

What Does an Oncologist Do? :

Oncology is the study of cancer. Oncologists specialize in managing and treating patients throughout the course of the disease, which involves:

  • Confirming a patient’s initial diagnosis
  • Explaining the cancer diagnosis and stage
  • Providing all possible treatment plans and offering recommendations
  • Overseeing the course of treatment
  • Helping patients manage symptoms and side effects of both the disease and the treatment plan

Oncologists typically have a specialty within the field, so they often expand a patient’s team to include the right doctors for a chosen treatment plan.

About Me

Dr. Anjana Sainani is a Consultant with the Medical Oncology department at Smt. Motiben B. Dalvi Hospital. Dr. Anjana Sainani completed her MBBS from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi. She graduated with MD from Institute of Naval Medicine INHS Asvini, Mumbai in 1997. After undergoing Hematoncology fellowship at Wadia children hospital in 1998 she further trained in Medical and Pediatric oncology at Tata Memorial hospital, Mumbai. Since 2002 she has been practising as a consultant medical oncologist at various esteemed hospitals of Mumbai and Royal Melbourne hospital Australia as an honorary consultant in Stem cell transplant Unit. She has actively participated in Bone Marrow transplant programmes, cancer research and trained medical oncologists in teaching programmes. Over all these years she has rich experience in treating various hematological and solid cancers. More than 25 years of experience in the field of Medical Oncology

Dr. Sainani is a member of European Society of Medical oncology, Indian Society of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine, Mumbai haematology group and Association of Medical Consultants. She has authored several national and international publications.
